LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT

Song of the Morning: Lay Aside Every Weight

Upon awakening, I heard a part of a familiar song. What the Lord gave me was, "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith..." It took a moment to recognize that it was a song we sang when I was in the choir at the assembly where I grew up.

Here are the lyrics:

Lay aside every weight,
So you can run with patience this race.
Lay aside every weight,
So you can with patience this race.
Looking onto Jesus,
The author and finisher of our faith.
Looking onto Jesus,
The author and finisher of our faith.

Put on the whole armor of God
So you can fight the good fight of faith.
And keep your eyes on the prize up above
And let nothing separate you from His love.
Lay aside every weight…
Looking unto Jesus,
The author and finisher of faith.

Whatever it is, that’s keeping you from serving Jesus
Pull it off, pull it of right now.
Whatever it is, that’s keeping you from serving Jesus
Pull it off, pull it of right now.

Pull off the former conversation
And put on the Lord Jesus Christ
Put away lying
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth
Looking unto Jesus,
The author and finisher of our faith.
Looking unto Jesus,
The author and finisher of our faith.

Scriptures:

Hebrews: 12:1-2
Hebrews (a people who cross over)
Chapter 12 (Kingdom, God’s rule, reign, authority)

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Ephesians 6:11
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

1Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Romans 8:37-39
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 4:21-25
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Romans 13:11-14
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Here’s the song: Two renditions…

One rendition by First Baptist Church of Hamilton Park: (They have the verse about putting on the armor of God) NOTE: I grew up in the Baptist church (LOL..)

One rendition by Dorothy Norwood (doesn’t have that verse)
